Victoria Steele

Victoria is a person with lived experience who is committed to the belief that all people can recover. She honors human growth and continues to contribute to her community's wellness. She was released from prison in August 2010 and celebrated 14 years of sobriety this year. Victoria works for the State of Connecticut as a Mental Health Assistant 2, currently pursuing a degree at Capitol Community College in Nursing, and is an active CPA Board Member. Over the years, Victoria has worked behind the scenes on Capitol Voices of Recovery show hosted by Hartford Public Access Television. She completed the Projects for Addiction and Cultural Competency Training (PACCT) and earned her Counselor in Training certificate. Victoria has been performing with the Dance Performance Project (JDPP) since 2013 and has performed at Hartford Stage as part of an evening with Piper Kerman, author of 'Orange Is the New Black.' She was a featured performer in JDPP’s 'In My Shoes,' a performance piece examining issues of incarceration which premiered at Hartford Stage to a sold-out audience and toured throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts. Victoria recently appeared in JDPP’s Unmute, in which she performed her own newly written piece called 'Where I'm From.' Victoria was also a panelist at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center with Michelle Alexander to discuss Ms. Alexander's book 'The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.'
